Isle of Wight (IOW) College student Eleanor Hortion has been declared the winner of this year’s ‘HMS Bestival’ themed Bestival Campsite Hub Decor competition. Eleanor’s design, which adorned one of Bestival’s colour-coded Campsite Hub’s, beat off competition from fellow IOW College students Ellisha Williams, Hobie Harwood, Lily Lofthouse, Jade Barry, Martyn Fisher, Brad Parratt, and Alice Barnes.

The Josie da Bank judged competition, which is an integral part of Bestival’s partnerships with IOW organisations, is run in conjunction with IOW College. Level 2/3 Art and Design course students take part, giving up their summer holiday time to not only design the distinctive Campsite Hub décor, but also to learn vital real life skills as part of the build team at Bestival, taking in on-site health and safety rules and the realities of seeing a design from draft to pride of place in situ at the campsites.

An excited Eleanor told us: “It was an exciting and unpredictable experience that taught me a lot about working in the real world. I have learnt the value of team work, and now have a better understanding of working with a real client”.

    Well done Eleanor!!

At this year’s Bestival, Oxfam collaborated with creative agency Scriberia to stage an on-site art installation, illustrating peoples support for the charities Love Syria campaign.

Over the summer Oxfam has been asking people to show their love and solidarity for Syrian people at seven major UK festivals. The charity has engaged with over 40,000 people who have pledged their support by sharing a heart symbol or signing the petition for more aid and peace.

Bestival represents the end of a summer of campaigning, and therefore Oxfam were working with Scriberia on site to produce a 16 foot scribe. The scribe really bought this campaign to life, telling the story from the refugee crisis that started it, to visually representing the thousands of voices of support gathered over the festival season.

Find out more information on Love Syria, to donate and sign the petition visit: www.oxfam.org.uk/syria-petition or www.oxfam.org.uk/get-involved/festivals/campaigners.

We promised you a 10th Birthday Spectacular and that’s exactly what happened! Four incredible days of unadulterated fun made our 10th Bestival the very best one yet. From the simply stunning new arena The Port and the madness of Lionel Richie’s inflatable head, to jaw-dropping headline sets from Fatboy Slim, Snoop Dogg and Elton John, we’ve had the time of our lives aboard HMS Bestival and it’s all down to what a fantastic crowd of sea-faring folk we had with us, so we’d like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you that made it so special. Thank you!

HMS Bestival Captain Rob da Bank: “Ahoy shipmates! Sadly it’s now time to disembark the good ship HMS Bestival and pack up The Port till next year. Words fail us in the Bestival office as to how fantastic a crowd you guys were and what a spectacle you all made right across the weekend, so big up and respect to all of you. Thanks to Mother Nature for a nearly all sunny show and we hope you all enjoyed all the amazing live acts, DJs, films, comedians, walkabout and actors as much as we did. A vintage year for Bestival and we owe it to all of you. We’re off to wash our hair and think of a theme for Bestival 2014. Get ya thinking caps on”!

There may have been a few showers but they never dampened spirits and there was sunshine and lots of smiling faces every single day. Fatboy Slim raised the bar to new heights for Main Stage headline sets on Friday and told us that it was: “one of the best gigs of my life!”

Bringing the show to a dizzying climax, the likes of which we may never see again, Elton John and his band, were life affirmingly brilliant and it seems the feeling is mutual as commenting on his set Sir Elton said it was: “One of the best evenings of my career. Amazing!”

If you’re after lasting mementos of two of the greatest sets in Bestival history then you’re in luck as both sets were recorded live and are now available to buy with a share of proceeds from sales going to charity including the Isle of Wight Youth Trust which offers counselling, advice, information and support services to young people aged 25 and under on the Isle of Wight.

Special guests Concert Live were aboard HMS Bestival and captured Elton’s first UK camping festival set since 1969. Available separately or as part of a special edition bundle offer, featuring a digital edition of Elton’s forthcoming album, ‘The Diving Board’order the rarest live recording from Bestival now!

Sir Elton John appeared on BBC Radio 2 to perform a couple of tracks yesterday and had some very kind words to say about Bestival, and the amazing crowd he played to on the Sunday night:

“I was very reluctant to play a festival, I haven’t played one since 1969 in Crumlin near Halifax and I was talked into it and thank god I was because it shows you don’t know what’s good for you sometimes. I had the best time there, I had the best crowd, we played really well, the crowd were unbelievable I’ve never had response like that in Britain in the whole of my career, so it was definitely one of the most memorable things we’ve ever done. So thanks to everyone who was there and for Rob da Bank who organises it. It was a fantastic day!……I might do another Bestival, I’m so loyal to that one now. I was just blown away.” Sir Elton John talking to Ken Bruce

Thanks Elton, you were absolutely incredible, and a massive thanks for the HMS Bestival crowd for giving him such an amazing experience.
